Proteins

Hey guys! So today it's all about PROTEINS! I love me some protein in all its forms. In my previous post on carbs, I mentioned that they are the primary fuel source of the body. However, proteins are a secondary fuel source for the body, in other words they are used for fuel when the body runs out of carbs or not enough carbs are present to fuel work. In the Caribbean we eat a wide range of protein, from plant based to animal based, from your regular chicken to your exotic Iguana we almost eat it all.😂😂 Below are images of the various proteins consumed in the Caribbean.

Proteins are very important within the human body as they not only act as a secondary fuel source, but they are necessary for growth, repair and recovery, immunity and of course promotes muscle building. Each gram of protein contains 4 calories and it is recommended that persons consume at least 0.8g per kg of body weight to meet daily protein requirements. The percentage of protein recommended for a balanced diet among the macro-nutrients are between 10-35% of overall daily diet. Protein requirements vary according to a persons need whether they are recovering from an injury or body building, but studies show anything beyond 2 grams per kg of body weight does not provide any extra benefit.

When choosing a protein to incorporate into your diet, I recommend going for a leaner protein. All plant based proteins which include your peas, beans and nuts will fall under lean proteins but they also contain the other macro-nutrients (carbs and good fats) within them so if you want just pure protein, go to your animal sources. Lean proteins from animal sources include your white meat such as, chicken and turkey breast.
I have seen some sites make red meat and pork enemies but I say eat them all! All you have to do is  look for or ask your butcher for leaner cuts of meat. When going for your red meats take the cuts with little or no marbling and meats like pork you just want to trim the fat before you cook them. Proteins from animals of course contain no carbohydrates but some amounts of fat. However, once you purchase leaner cuts of meat or trim the fat you eliminate most of the fat that comes from animal protein. Your fish and shell fish are also great sources of lean protein and they also come with added benefits like trace minerals and Omega 3's. Exotic meats such as iguana and  rabbit are lean protein sources and all contribute to meeting your daily protein requirements.

So whether you eat protein from plants or animals sources, exotic or regular it is important to focus on leanness, amount and variety. Once you keep these things in mind, its okay to go bold with your protein choices.

Next Time we will discuss FATS!!!!  so be on the look out.
 Bye for now😗
