Snacking

Hey Guys, hope everyone has been doing great. This week we are going to discuss one of my favourite things which are snacks. In the world over, most if not all people have a snack or 2 daily and each region may have  a different interpretation of what a snack is for them. In the Caribbean, when we hear snack we automatically think of something in a rustling pack like corn curls, cheese sticks, chips, biscuits or a candy bar. However, snacks are more than just manufactured products in a pack, they are an important means of adding more nutritional value to our diets and therefore we should choose them wisely.

Common Caribbean Snacks
Snacks are small food amounts eaten between your 3 square meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) that prolong the filling effect of your main meals. Let's face it your three square meals don't cut it (well at least not for me 🤣) and you need something in between them to hold you over until it is time for your next meal, or just something to pick at and keep that metabolism going. It is important that you choose snacks that add to your overall well being and rather than just eating a snack just because.  Snacks are suppose to add to your overall diet as your three square meals may fall short sometimes, in terms of meeting your daily requirements for certain vitamins and/or minerals and including the right snacks can bring you to that point. Below are some images of healthy snacks in the Caribbean.

Choose wholesome snacks like fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes as they contain the macro-nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are essential for life. Some great snack choices which I  include in my diet are split channa (chic peas), plantain chips, fresh and dried fruits, protein bars and almonds or any  other nuts. I also recommend dark chocolate and fruit sorbets if you're into chocolate and frozen treats. It's all right to have a corn curls or a heaping scoop of ice cream every now and then but don't make it an every day thing. Also, always remember to check for the caloric information as well as saturated fat on your pack snacks. It's all about balance and moderation, so the next time you feel like a snack just think about adding nutritional value to your diet as well as the amount you consume because after all it's  snack not a meal.

Until next time guys, get your snack on! 😘💋
